Elmo RICHARDS

RICHARDS, Elmo Eugene - At the McMaster Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario, on Friday June 26th, 2009, Elmo Eugene Richards, in his 77th year.  Beloved husband and soul mate of Shirley-Jane (nee Laidlaw) respected and loved father of Alan (Peterborough) and Bryan and wife Kimeva (Saskatoon).  Loved and appreciated brother of Denny (Carolyn) of Mississauga, and Marsha (Charles) of St. Thomas.  Much loved grandfather of Kahla, Brock and Tatiana, and respected and loved step grandfather of Erika, Nicole, and Brett, and step great grandchild, Norah.  Elmo was born in London, Ontario on May 28th, 1933, the son of the late Elmo Richards and Hazel (Crabbe) Richards.  He was a retired teacher of the Norfolk Public and Secondary School Boards, and a retired Real Estate Agent and appraiser of 25 years with the Simcoe and District Real Estate Board.  Elmo and Shirley-Jane lived in Simcoe from 1957 and began a legacy of volunteerism that will rarely be equaled.  Elmo was active as his sons grew, being involved in the Lynn Valley Scouts, Simcoe Minor Hockey, the Golden Gardens Minor Hockey Tournament, Young Voyageurs, the Leo club and many others.  Recognized for his public speaking and master of ceremony skills, as a Charter Member of Toastmasters International, he served at countless weddings, convocations, award programs and events.  As a long serving member and 60th President of the Simcoe Lions Club, he became a life member as recognition for his service.  For over 40 years he had been involved with the Community Services Advisory Board for the Town of Simcoe, the Parks Board, and Cemetery Board, and more recently with the Haldimand-Norfolk Housing Corporation.  He was a founder of the initiative to begin the Simcoe Walkway and contributed in countless other ways to his beloved community.  His volunteer contributions over those many years were recognized in 1997 when he received co Simcoe citizen of the year honors with his long time colleague Mr. Chris Lee.  Resting at the JASON SMITH FUNERAL CHAPEL, 689 Norfolk Street North, Simcoe on Monday, June 29th, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m.  Elmo's funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday morning at 11 am with Rev. John Cruickshank officiating.  The service will be followed by a reception at St Paul's Presbyterian Church, Lot St., Simcoe.  Donations would be appreciated to either the Simcoe Lions Club or the SCS “Rising from the Ashes” fund.
