Dr. Jim PETERS
Thursday April 07, 2022

PETERS, Dr. James Allan, MD, FRCS  “Jim” – promoted to the loving arms of his Lord & Saviour at the Norfolk General Hospital, Simcoe on Thursday, April 7th, 2022 in his 90th year.  Cherished husband of Joyce Peters (nee Hubick) of Port Dover.  Loving father of Tom Peters (Judy) of Guelph, Jim Peters Jr. (Eleanor Simmers) of Pemberton, BC; John Peters (Shelley) of Simcoe, Jody Slater (Drew) of Port Dover and Aster Shifraw of Simcoe.  Proud grandfather & great grandfather of Darelle (Terry), children Ruby & Nixon;  Cam; Cole; Daniel; Jana; Caleb; Meseret and Nathan.  Predeceased by his sisters Mary Jane Thompson & Barbara June Gustafson.  A Strasbourg Saskatchewan boy, Jim came east to the University of Western Ontario with dreams of becoming a doctor.  His dreams came true.  He graduated with his MD in general surgery in 1956 under the tutelage of Dr. Angus McLaughlin.  After his surgical residency in London, Ontario, Dr. Jim and his high school sweetheart Joyce, moved to Collingwood General Hospital for a few years, before being recruited by Dr. Ross Parker in 1965 to come to Simcoe Ontario to join his practice and work out of the Norfolk General Hospital.  After Dr. Parker retired, Dr. Jim added Dr’s Fisher and Olsen to the practice.  This was a thriving partnership for many years.  Dr. Jim was appointed Chief of Surgery in 1974 and he remained that until he retired on February 4, 1999.  As a student of his craft, Dr. Jim was always adding new specialties to his practice and instrumental in bringing new surgical procedures to Norfolk.  Over the years, he became a specialist in gynecology and arthroscopic surgery, so cases didn’t have to be shipped out to London or Hamilton.  He was also a tireless fund raiser as well.  Even after retiring, Dr. Jim was instrumental in helping to raise money for the first CT Scanner at Norfolk General that was installed in 2006.  Dr. Jim also had a thirst for missionary work.  He got started in Bangladesh in 1992, where he and Joyce served at a remote mission hospital south of Dhakka for three months. Dr. Jim continued that work after he retired with tours in Bangladesh again, Togo, Africa, and Inuvik NWT, Canada.  Dr. Jim finally hung up the gloves, so to speak, in his mid 70’s.  In between all this, Dr. Jim was a farmer.  He found time to farm up to 1000 acres of soybeans and corn annually and raise a stable of Arabian horses – a passion that was his favorite of all.  Friends are invited to share their memories of Dr. Jim with his family at the JASON SMITH FUNERAL CHAPEL, 689 Norfolk St. North Simcoe N3Y 3R3 for visitation on Tuesday, April 12th, 2022 from 1-3 & 6-8 p.m.  Jim’s homegoing service will be held at Emmanuel Bible Church, 24 Churchill Circle, Simcoe on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Steve Faulkner officiating.  Interment:  Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe.  Those wishing to donate in memory of Jim are asked to consider Memorial Christian Hospital, Bangladesh or the Norfolk General Hospital Foundation.  Personal online condolences at www.smithfuneralchapel.com  (519) 426-0199
