Monday August 24, 2015

THOMPSON, David Raymond Mercer (1924 - 2015) - It is with sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of David at the Norview Lodge, Simcoe, Ontario on Monday, August 24th, 2015 at the age of 91.  Dave was born March 2, 1924 in Simcoe, Ontario where he lived his life surrounded by his loving family and many dear friends. He spent his youth on Crescent Blvd. and in addition to boyhood chores, he had carefree summer times swimming at his family’s Port Dover cottage and icy winter days honing his skating skills on Sutton’s Pond.  In 1943, he answered the call of duty in the Canadian Air Force with wartime service overseas before returning to Simcoe to marry his loving wife, Norma, of 68 years.  David became a pillar of the Simcoe business community upon taking over his Father-In-Law’s business, Pearce Butcher’s Mens Wear, on Norfolk St., Simcoe.  During his 37 year haberdashery career, he and his wife Norma took great satisfaction during buying excursions, creating fashionable window displays and offering quality garments to grateful customers.  Throughout his full and rewarding life, his uncanny athletic abilities brought him awards and pleasure in skating, pitching softball, golfing, curling and beach shuffleboard.  He was a member of the local Optimist Club and was active in the Trinity Anglican Church where his deep tenor voice enriched the choir.  In retirement, Dave enjoyed his winter travels to Destin, Florida and delighted in frequent family get-togethers, sharing his loving, positive attitude and wonderful sense of humour while still maintaining a continued loyalty to his lifelong friends.  Dave will be sadly missed and forever lovingly remembered by his family and friends.  Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears.  Beloved husband of Norma Thompson (nee Butcher) of Simcoe.  Loving father of Kathryn Harries of Tillsonburg, Myrna Dow (William) of Kitchener and Susan Roy of Simcoe (late Bob - 2004).  Cherished grandfather & great grandfather of Jeffrey Harries (Moy), their son Cole;  Laura Peace (Chris), their children William and Katherine;  Cheryl Grove (Jason), their daughter Felicity;  and Melissa White (Kerry).  David will be lovingly remembered by his sister Victoria Steele (late Ramey).  David will also be sadly missed by his sister-in-law Lola Thompson of Port Dover.  Predeceased by his parents Earl and Winifred Thompson, a brother Donovan and a sister Vivian Swallow (late Harold).  David will lovingly remembered by several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.  A private visitation and funeral service will be held at the JASON SMITH FUNERAL CHAPEL, 689 Norfolk St. N. Simcoe.  Interment:  Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe.  Those wishing to donate in memory of David are asked to consider the Alzheimer’s Society of H-N.  Norma & family wish to thank the staff of Norview Lodge for their wonderful care & compassion during David’s final days.  Thank you all.  Personal online condolences at www.smithfuneralchapel.com (519) 426-0199
